An opportunity has arisen within our Dermatology Team.   It offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team to deliver excellent dermatology care in Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Teaching Hospitals Trust (MWL). A specialist interest is welcomed.

This post is for a Specialty Doctor in Dermatology This is a part time permanent post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

The work of the Department is largely out-patient based and we see patients with skin cancer and general dermatology, however, there are occasional admissions to the general medical wards at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Paediatric wards at Ormskirk DGH where we provide cover. This is a very busy Department covering a population of 250,000. The post holder will be expected to work very closely with other units including gynaecology, paediatrics, ENT instead of head and neck, maxillofacial, plastics, and rheumatology.

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Examination, investigation, and treatment of patients attending the Dermatology Department.
  • Supervise existing junior staff including Trust Grade Doctors, Clinical Assistants, Hospital Practitioners and Nurses.
  • Participation in the internal education activities of the Department including teaching nurses, medical students, junior doctors, and other visitors to the Department.
  • Participation in the external educational activities, including meetings and courses hosted by the Department.
  • Participation in the research, audit and clinical governance activities of the Department.
  • Providing medical support to non-medical staff of the clinic
  • Performance of administrative tasks relevant to Dermatology (such as writing of letters to colleagues and patients, compiling data, development of clinic protocols).
  • Clinical liaison with other hospital departments, general practitioners and other agencies as required.
  • Participation in developing clinical networks within Dermatology in Mersey and continue to take part in the Grand Round Meetings at Broadgreen Hospital.
  • Participation in the regional audits.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to requirements of the General Medical Council.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Office and Secretarial facilities are available within the Trust.

Teaching & Training Responsibilities

  • Every opportunity will be provided to the appointee to develop special interests and skills in aspects of medical care, information technology, medical audit, etc. The post holder will maintain his/her own continuing professional development in line with current guidelines on professional responsibilities.
  • There is a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre on the Hospital sites with library and study facilities. Study leave will be provided to support and develop the post holder’s interests.

Research & Audit Responsibilities

  • There may be opportunities for participation in Research and Development within the Trust either as a collaborator, a principal investigator or as an observer and the Trust will endeavour to encourage and support this. The researcher should adhere to the principles of Research Governance in the domains of ethics, science, information and data protection, health and safety, employment and financial probity. Members of staff wishing to participate in research activity are required in the first instance to contact the Research and Development Department.
  • It should be noted that individuals who conduct research without ethical and Trust approval are in breach of conditions of employment with the Trust and are not indemnified by the Trust against claims of clinical negligence or other cause of litigation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration with a Full Licence to Practice (GMC)
  • Minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification
  • Minimum of six years’ experience in Dermatology in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ since obtaining experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades included from overseas will also be accepted
Desirable criteria
  • Attended appropriate Training courses

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Dermatology
  • Teaching experience (Medical students, peers, MDT)
  • Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • To provide a range of services to compliment the current skill mix of the department

  • Practises with the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in the GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities framework (or equivalent for Dentists)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; adapts style depending on audience

  • Speak fluent English to at least I.E.L.R.S level 7.5.
