Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join our friendly and enthusiastic respiratory team at the James Paget University Hospital.

Prospective candidates should be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT, or be listed on the Specialist Register of the GMC, for Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine. The Trust is an equal opportunities employer and operates a no smoking policy.

 

Main duties of the job

This is an opportunity to join a highly motivated respiratory team, comprising of three substantive consultants and one long term locum consultant, supported by a multidisciplinary specialist team including nursing, physiologists and support staff, providing a comprehensive service of the highest quality for both inpatient and outpatient services.

We have a close working relationship with the Thoracic Surgery and Oncology departments at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and regional access to Difficult Asthma MDTs

We also participate in National COPD, Asthma and Lung Cancer Audits.

Working for our organisation

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) provides medical services for a population of approximately 230,000 living in South East Norfolk and North East Suffolk, plus a large number of visitors to the coast and Broads National Park during the summer months. In addition, it provides approximately 1/3 of the secondary care teaching for the expanding Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia, where the appointee will be given the opportunity to play a significant teaching role.

Respiratory services and investigative facilities include; flexible bronchoscopy, EBUS, transbronchial biopsies, medical thoracoscopy, Pulmonary Function Laboratory, overnight oximetry, sleep studies and operation of a “fast track” straight to CT service for lung cancer.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC and/or hold CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine or have an agreed date for it which is within 6 months of the date of interview.
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • MD/PhD

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty especially with a wide experience in General Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.
  • Must be proficient in flexible bronchoscopy.
  • Experience of working in and leading a multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
Desirable criteria
  • Training in sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing Consultants. This could include, for example, experience of sleep medicine or medical thoracosopy.

Academic Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Experience of using evidence base to support decision making
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in research projects and published papers

Key Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies.
  • Experience in teaching junior medical staff
