Job overview
The role of the histopathology department is to provide a specialist diagnostic service to patients. Histology is the study of tissues and organs through the examination of the microscopical architecture of tissues and the relationship between the different types of cells and tissue types found within tissues and organs.
This post holder will support qualified staff in the histopathology department based at Harrogate District Hospital in the provision of a specialist diagnostic service. Under supervision the post holder will perform technical procedure procedures to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease. The post holder will be involved with direct handling of potentially high risk uncontained body tissues and fluids from patients.
Main duties of the job
Under supervision, perform routine diagnostic testing procedures in the laboratory on a rotational basis as determined by the senior BMS staff and prioritise own workload appropriately whilst following agreed protocols and procedures. Tasks include:
- Assess the suitability of samples presented for analysis and take appropriate decisions in the case of an unsuitable sample
- Correctly match specimens, request forms and patient details and take appropriate action when there are discrepancies
- Accurately identify specimens from clinical data supplied so that the specimens can be correctly entered on the computer system. a
- Take accurate descriptive notes whilst assisting the pathologist at specimen dissection
- Produce digital images of specimens
- Decontamination of the cut up area following specimen dissection in accordance with laboratory protocols
- Filing of tissue specimens
- Carry out routine automated staining techniques
- Ensuring that processing and staining machines are supplied with fresh reagents and are maintained regularly as per department protocol
- Have a full understanding of the correct and safe use and day to day maintenance of specialised scientific equipment used in the laboratory

Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP is an innovative joint-venture pathology service between Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This partnership delivers a high quality pathology service through collaboration between three Trusts for the benefit of patient and service users but the successful candidate will be employed directly by the NHS as a Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust employee.

- A levels or equivalent in science subjects to include biology.
Experience

- Previous technical experience in a UKAS pathology laboratory.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of histopathology techniques
- Experience of non-gynae cytology
- Practical experience of collating information for MDT
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of histopathology and non-gynaecological cytology.
