Job overview

This is a fixed term Consultant Rheumatologist post at Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust,  to cover long term sickness joining a supportive and dynamic team of 4 Consultants (including the new appointee), 1 Specialist Registrar, 1 Trust Grade Registrar, 1 GP trainee/SHO, 1 Foundation Year 1 doctor (shared with Dermatology), and 4 Rheumatology Nurse Specialists (3 FTE).

The department, part of a Clinical Business Unit including Cardiology, Respiratory, Renal, Neurology, Dermatology and Rheumatology, sees approximately 7,000 patients annually (1,500 new and 5,500 follow-ups). Clinics are held at KGH and community sites.

There is a weekly departmental meeting and Grand Round during academic terms. The post-holder will contribute to teaching University of Leicester medical students, as well as participate in audits and regional events such as the Midlands Rheumatology Society.

Applicants must hold MB ChB, MRCP (UK) (or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register for Rheumatology or eligible within 6 months. Main duties of the job

Consultant in Rheumatology at Kettering General Hospital NHS FT.

Special Interests:
Interest in osteoporosis/metabolic bone diseases is desirable. Development of specialist interests will be supported subject to organisational need.

Clinical Duties:
Provide outpatient clinics across KGH main site, Corby, Wellingborough, and Nene Park, including travel time. The post includes all duties typical of a UK Rheumatology Department.

On-call:
No on-call commitments.

Workload:
The department manages ~7,000 patient attendances annually. The post holder will review referrals within 1 working day. Responsible for running 5 clinics per week, including HOT clinics for urgent cases. New patient services enhancing experience and flow are welcomed.

Facilities:
Dedicated reception, clinical, and office space with secretarial and specialist nurse support. Biological infusions are provided at the ambulatory care unit with medical cover from general physicians; complex infusions managed within the rheumatology clinical area.

Teaching:
Active teaching program with weekly grand rounds and four annual academic half-days. Access to a modern Education Centre and medical library.

IT:
Computerized administration, pathology access, and PACS radiology system with high-resolution screens available in key locations.

PROVISIONAL TIMETABLE
Provisional assessment of Programmed Activities for a whole-time contract of 10 PA split between DCC and SPA. 
Direct Clinical Care (includes clinical activity, clinically related activity) (5 clinics, ward referrals and admin) 7.5 DCC  Supporting Professional Activities (includes  CPD, audit, teaching and research) 2.5 SPAs

Person specification

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC
  • MRCP(UK)
  • Current certification BLS
  • CCT holder in Rheumatology or eligibility to be on the Specialist register in Rheumatology within 6 months
Desirable criteria
  • Successful completion of SpR training in Rheumatology (or CCT within 6 months of AAC)

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Effective participation in clinical audit
  • Experience of post graduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist interest to complement those of other consultants in the department
  • Publications in recognised Medicine journals
