Job overview
We are recruiting two Specialty Doctors to cover psychiatry needs across HMP Nottingham, HMP Lincoln and North Sea Camp
Main duties of the job
To provide high quality, trauma informed psychiatric care within integrated mental health teams across HMP Nottingham, HMP Lincoln and North Sea Camp. The post holder, under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist, will deliver assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with severe mental illness, neurodevelopmental conditions and complex comorbidity in custodial settings, ensuring equivalence of care with community services.
You will join an outstanding-rated Trust delivering trauma-informed, equivalent mental healthcare within prisons, supported by strong medical leadership, protected SPA time and hybrid working.
A typical working week is likely to include clinics/patient reviews, team meeting, liaison with other professionals, including the GP, clinical administration, and supervision. The post holder will also maintain close contact with his supervising consultant and counterpart Specialty Doctor.

Essential criteria
- • Willing to ensure the development, maintenance, and dissemination of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD, training and development programmes.
- • Willing to comply with professional codes of practice and maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues in relation to psychiatry and wider mental health through engagement in health and justice clinical networks and communities of practice
- • Reliable and accessible to colleagues within Secured Services, the Medical Directorate, and across NHFT.
- • Approachable and able to demonstrate empathy, a willingness to listen to the views of colleagues, an open communication style, and receptivity to feedback.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- • Full GMC Registration
- • Minimum of 3 years SHO/Core Training or higher grade in psychiatry.
- • Prison or forensic psychiatry experience or General Adult psychiatry experience
- • Eligibility or approval under Section12 of the Mental Health Act
- • Ability to provide compassionate, trauma informed care in secure settings
Desirable criteria
- • Additional Postgraduate Qualifications
- • MRCPsych or equivalent
- • Experience in neurodiversity / ADHD
- • Approved Clinical Status or an interest in pursuing Approved Clinical Status
- • Teaching, leadership or service development experience

Essential criteria
- • The ability to provide trauma-informed clinical care, including when faced with challenging behaviour and the constraints of secured settings.
- • The ability to prioritize effectively, to work in a flexible way, and to respond to change to support the needs of patients and continuity of psychiatry provision across NHFT Secured Services
- • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and compassionate leadership skills
- • A growth mindset and willingness to learn and teach in a constructive manner, taking on board the ideas of others and working within a leadership structure.
- • The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues including those working for subcontracted services and across other disciplines.
- • Sound judgement and astuteness in understanding and working with complexity
- • The ability to gather and assimilate data from across secured services to support effective clinical governance and quality improvement of psychiatry service provision
- • Ability to work effectively across multiple sites.
