Job overview

Adult Critical Care are looking to employ a motivated and conscientious experienced nurse to join our friendly and dynamic multi professional team caring for critically ill patients and their families. You will have a broad experience and insight into caring for acutely unwell patients and their families. You will have the ability to lead a team, prioritise and respond to planned and unplanned situations and ensure the smooth and efficient running of the unit.

 Successful candidates will be expected to work across site as needed. they will also be required to work both days and night shifts as well as participating in the cross site rotation programme.

 

You must lead the team in developing critical care by promoting excellence and innovative thinking. 

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure in a stressful environment with complex situations.

You will need to solve clinical problems and issues sensitively and have enhanced skills to support others to achieve this. Clinical knowledge and skills are integral to this role as it is a commitment to working as part of a dedicated team by supporting new developments and thus enhancing the Critical Care service.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure in what can be a distressing environment. ‘If you have not completed the Critical Care Course you will still be considered for short list. However, the expectation is that you will undertake the course within the first year in post’

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will act as deputy to the Unit sister/charge nurse. He/she will be required to:

Act as the deputy to the Unit sister/charge nurse regularly taking charge of the Unit and ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.
Be an effective leader and role model and will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support the implementation of both clinical and non‑clinical governance.
Work flexibly as a member of the Unit team and in support of the Unit Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in health / nursing related Studies or equivalent level of study
  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Relevant post-basic diploma in Critical Care Specialist Pathway
  • Possession of a Mentoring Course NMC
Desirable criteria
  • Formal leadership and management training / course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 4 years minimum experience at Band 5 within the acute setting, 2 of which must be within critical care
  • Supervision of non registered staff, pre registration and post basic students
  • Ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively
  • Evidence of leadership, management & time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate an involvement in link nurse, or project work
  • Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance and use of the knowledge and skills framework

communication and relationship

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy
  • Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of negotiation and influencing skills
  • Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions

Analytical and Judgement Skill

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care
  • Able to respond to problem situations and to ensure that effective interventions are put in place
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of current issues related to the NHS policies
  • Evidence of data collection and analysis

Planning/ organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations
  • Able to contribute to the development of implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate leadership skills & ability to effectively lead a team
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritise workload of self. Demonstrate an ability to recognise when workload & priorities of others inappropriate and intervene as required.
