Job overview
We are looking to recruit a consultant who is committed to excellence in Geriatrics to join a pro-active team with an excellent clinical reputation in providing a range of services within the hospital and the community. Our consultant team delivers a high quality needs related service to frail and older patients wherever they are. The team uses their knowledge and experience to lead and influence the development of services for the frail and elderly both within the Trust and in the community. You will also have an opportunity to gain valuable experience of service transformation and development.
The successful candidate will be joining a well organised department providing a wide range of services at specialty and sub-specialty level. We work together collaboratively and supportively and we are always looking to improve the care for frail, elderly patients across the organisation.
Main duties of the job
Duties & responsibilities
- To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient geriatrics service and support Trust and Network, in the aim to provide the best possible care to patients
- Provision of a service, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
- Cover for colleagues' authorised absences
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the consultant on-call rota for General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics
- Participate in service development and business planning
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally
- Participating in medical audit, Clinical Governance processes and CPD
- Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree: MD or PhD
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register via either CCT or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview / CESR / European Community Rights
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of all aspects of Geriatric Medicine
- Experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan
Desirable criteria
- Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
Research, Audit and QI
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in audit/QI in Geriatrics
Desirable criteria
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Implementation of QI
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Evidence of effectively organising and delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role
- Post graduate qualification in Medical Education
Management
Essential criteria
- Attendance at Management Course
