Job overview

The Head of Midwifery & Sexual Health is a key position within the Directorate and Health Board, with a prime focus on the delivery of high quality, safe, compassionate, and effective care.


Provide highly visible, authoritative clinical leadership in terms of strategy, operations, and professional practice, in line with the Powys IMTP and Welsh Government Policy frameworks.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is the Health Board expert on all matters pertaining to Midwifery and will advise the Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, as well as wider members of the Executive Team, on the development and delivery of modern, effective Maternity and Sexual Health Services for the Powys population. Work with multi-agency partners to improve health care provision across organisational boundaries and take responsibility for promoting and improving the health and wellbeing of the population.


Lead on midwifery development programmes, midwifery staffing to include recruitment, retention and workforce planning, measuring and improving standards of care and patient/client experience, the delivery of agreed objectives, targets, quality standards and budget management as per the IMTP and service plan.


Be an active member of the Heads of Nursing & Midwifery Group, providing leadership and direction of the professional agenda in Powys. Also represent Powys on local, regional and national forums.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Live Registration - Midwifery with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Safeguarding Level 4
  • Management/Leadership qualification
  • NHS strategic agenda and an in-depth knowledge of the current midwifery agenda affecting NHS Wales
Desirable criteria
  • Mentor/Preceptor qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience at a senior nurse level, within Midwifery, demonstrating ability to deliver improvements to client care and effectively manage operationally
  • Significant team and service leadership experience
  • Management of complex change
  • Budgetary management skills
  • Significant experience of leading clinical teams and cross-boundary projects
  • Strategic workforce planning
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in provided services and in the commissioning field
