Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join our team to undertake the role of Senior Training & Development Manager (Band 8a). 

 This is a senior, strategic leadership role with national responsibility for shaping and delivering highquality research training across Health and Care Research Wales. The post holder will lead a coordinated, needsdriven Research Training and Development Programme, providing operational leadership to the Training & Development team and driving workforce development that strengthens research capability across Wales. 
 

The role focuses on building inclusive, impactful training pathways for researchers and research support staff, spanning mentoring, leadership development, facilitator networks, and national programmes. Working in partnership with NHS Wales, academic institutions, professional bodies, NIHR, and Welsh Government, the post holder will provide system leadership, ensure robust governance and value for money, and embed continuous improvement through strong evaluation and performance oversight. 

 

The postholder will have a nominated base within the NHS and will have the ability to work remotely/flexibly.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the development and provision of a coordinated, high quality and needs driven Research Training and Development Programme for Health and Care Research Wales  

  • Strategically co-ordinate workforce development initiatives for researchers and research management and support staff across Health and Care Research Wales 

  • Provide expert input and support to initiatives promoting and developing research careers for Health and Care Research Wales 

  • Provide operational leadership and managerial support to the Training and Development team

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to master’s level in a relevant health and/or social care field or equivalent relevant experience
  • Evidence of significant continuing professional development
  • Significant working knowledge of health and/or social care research management to include experience in the planning, co ordination and conduct of research
  • Specialist knowledge of workforce development approaches and staff development theory, including contemporary approaches to leadership, motivation, and mentoring, and experience of developing and delivering courses to support staff professional development
  • Extensive knowledge of training, learning and development approaches

Experience

Essential criteria
  • developing and delivering training and (workforce) development programmes within higher education and/or a health or social care setting for multi-disciplinary groups
  • working in education, training and workforce development
  • staff management, particularly in the line management of research and research-related staff
  • working at a senior managerial level in a relevant setting
  • financial management and project management and/or delivering projects in a variety of settings

  • Organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise heavy workloads and manage time effectively to meet tight deadlines

  • Computer literate (MS Office applications)
