An exciting job role have arisen to work within the Community Respiratory Service as a Respiratory Healthcare assistant.  The successful applicant would be working cross site (Both Shrewsbury & Telford Base) supporting patients throughout Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.

The HCA trained to NVQ level 3 will carry out activities delegated by the Shropshire Community Respiratory Service and work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver care to respiratory patients managed by the Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust. 

Main duties of the job

·      Taking specialist observations for the Community respiratory team in both clinic and domiciliary settings including:  blood pressures, weights, heights, oximetry, peak expiratory flow and respiratory rate

 Once trained completed to carry our spirometry breathing tests with patients in both clinic and domiciliary settings and record the results for interpretation by a qualified member of the respiratory service.

·       Manage/maintain the ordering and stock checks for the Community Respiratory Service.

·         Ensure all equipment is clean, safe and tested frequently including the calibration of spirometry equipment.

·         To manage a personal delegated workload without direct supervision whilst acknowledging professional limitations in knowledge and competence.

·         Assist and support the respiratory nurses and respiratory physiotherapists in the provision of preventative, rehabilitative and supportive care for managing people with respiratory conditions

·         To participate in the promotion of health and the prevention of ill health, and foster independence whilst respecting the clients right to choose.  This should include giving clinical advice and information, supplying patients and families information leaflets and advise of any support groups as needed.

·         To be aware of and respect rights to patient confidentiality.

·         To work flexibly within the Respiratory Team in line with service          need.

Person specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Grade A – C in English, Maths or Equivalent
  • NVQ level 3 Qualification in relevant Healthcare subject
  • ARTP Spirometry certification or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with people in a caring environment
  • Health Care Assistant experience (hospital, nursing home, educational establishment, community)
  • Experience of working with patients suffering from Chronic Respiratory condition would be preferable

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding/experience of Chronic Respiratory conditions and the potential effects on the patients including psychological effects
  • Experience of performing basic objective measurements e.g.: measuring weight, height, blood pressure, oximetry, peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and Respiratory Rate
  • Ability to work with basic office IT system such as word and excel, preferably experience of working with a Health-related IT system
