We are seeking a Peer Support Worker who has personal lived experience of with lived experience lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges and having personally utilised inpatient mental health services to work in our multi-disciplinary teams on Pine, acute inpatient mental health ward at the Redwoods Centre.

Peer support workers utilise their own recovery journey to offer hope and belief that recovery is possible and promote choice, self-determination and opportunities and assist the individual to set and achieve their own unique recovery goals.

Please note that lived experience roles require applicants to have personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges and having personally utilised inpatient mental health services. Applicants who do not hold this lived experience need not apply.

Do you have direct lived experience of mental health challenges and of accessing an inpatient mental health service?

 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • To work with the multi-disciplinary team in the support of both informal service users and those detained under the Mental Health Act within acute inpatient settings.
  • To assume a ‘coaching’ role supporting service users in developing personal recovery plans; this can be delivered individually or in groups.
  • To assist service users to identify their strengths, personal interests and goals.
  • To provide opportunities for service users to direct their own recovery process.
  • To model/mentor a recovery process and demonstrate coping skills, using own experience of recovery.
  • To act as a role model to service users to inspire hope, share life experiences and lessons learned as a person in recovery.
  • To support service users to negotiate an ‘Advanced Directive’ with all people involved in their care and others who provide support.
  • To contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and review of care with the multi-disciplinary team.

Lived Experience of receiving care from [e.g. secondary mental health services] is essential to fulfil the person specification requirements for this role. We are aware that this role may be based in a team where you are currently being treated. Please be aware that if this is the case, your application will not be disadvantaged but upon beginning employment with us, a transfer of care to another team (or potentially organisation) will be coordinated to ensure safe working for your care and employment needs. Similarly, if you need [ eg community mental health services] input whilst in role, we would arrange a transfer to another team to separate your care and your employment. This is in line with our organisational practices for all staff working at MPFT.

Qualifications & training

  • Commitment to obtain underpinning knowledge through work based learning and mandatory training, (including accredited peer support worker training if not previously undertaken)
  • Willingness to undertake or completion of ImROC Peer Support training

  • Accredited certificate in Life Coaching
  • Accredited peer support worker training

Experience

  • Own personal lived experience of mental health challenges
  • Own personal experience of accessing inpatient mental health services
  • Willing to positively share own life experiences, and personal experience of mental health challenges with service users and carers
  • Developed plans for managing own recovery
  • Experience of actively supporting individuals to identify and work towards achieving personal goals in a related social care or health setting (paid or unpaid)
