Job overview
University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) is looking to recruit an Associate Medical Director for Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education for both RSUH & County Hospital to be responsible for ensuring that excellent education and training is delivered throughout UHNM. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who has an enthusiasm for education.
You will, on behalf of the Trust, be responsible for delivering the Educational Contract that has been agreed by the Postgraduate Dean. To also work with the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Human Resources in delivery of our education standards, enabling our Trust to meet Our Strategy 2025-2035, and developing a centre of education excellence that embraces innovation and change
You will act as the key link between the Regional Postgraduate Dean and the Trust on educational matters. This role is crucial in ensuring that the educational essentials are in place for all the junior doctors in training. You must have an interest and enthusiasm for improving the delivery of Postgraduate Medical Education and continuing professional development, good leadership skills and the ability to manage change.
Main duties of the job
The Associate Medical Director for Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education is responsible, on behalf of the Trust, for delivering the Educational Contract the Trust has agreed with the Postgraduate Dean.
To monitor quality of education and training within individual departments in the Trust, including review and acting on feedback received from NHSEWTE visits and doctor’s surveys.
To work with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief People Officer and Guardian of Safe Working Hours to ensure effective 24/7 rotas are in place for junior doctors which meet legislative, service and training requirements.
To establish forums for college tutors/educational supervisors and junior medical staff to ensure all medical educational matters are properly considered and strategically managed across the Trust.
To ensure the professional development needs of Trust grade doctors are given the same attention as doctors in training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Corporate Trust Responsibilities
· Liaise with the Dean of the Faculty of Health, Head of Postgraduate Medicine, Keele University in developing strong links between Trust, University and NHSEWTE in the delivery of the educational agenda
· Ensure educational needs are delivered and contractual obligations met in respect of postgraduate doctors in training.
· Provide advice to the Trust on key developments in national education and training initiatives for postgraduate doctors in training and their implications for the Trust
· Ensure that professional standards are delivered and contractual obligations met in respect of the EWTD for resident doctors and requirements of the Postgraduate Dean in respect of medical education
· In collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Studies and other clinical teachers ensure an ongoing programme of education and support as medical students graduate and become residentr doctors
· Act as a key link between the Regional Postgraduate Dean and the Trust on educational matters
· Ensure that all educational and clinical supervisors meet the requisite standards for accreditation by the GMC
Trust Responsibilities – Postgraduate Doctors Education
- Working with the Chief People Officer:
Ø Ensure that there is an appropriate Induction for all new Doctors, including Locums, to the Trust.
Ø Ensure the educational essentials are in place such as ARCPs for all postgraduate Doctors in training.
Ø Ensure a mechanism exists for identifying and dealing with poor performance in respect of postgraduate Doctors in training.
Ø Ensure input for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education into Trust planning processes.
Ø Ensure that there is sufficient support for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education activities in the Trust including business management, financial advice and secretarial assistance.
Ø Be involved in management of the Clinical Education Centre and Mid-Staffs PGMC, linking with the Centre Managers as necessary on facilities and educational programmes and with the Librarians to ensure good provision of Library and IT facilities for Doctors in training.
· Ensure that the "educational climate" in the Trust is conducive to learning for doctors in training.
· Ensure that all resident doctors have personal development portfolios.
· Ensure NHSEWTE job evaluations are returned as required for resident doctors in training.
· Link with NHSEWTE on behalf of the Trust on educational matters. Chair the Trust’s Medical Education Committee comprising Specialty Tutors and others involved in the delivery and support of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education in the Trust, thus promoting educational issues between colleges, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
· Participate in or prepare for College and NHSEWTE Quality Assurance visits to the Trust as appropriate and work with educational leads to ensure that actions arising from visits are appropriately addressed.
· Ensure provision of a system of careers advice and counselling for postgraduate Doctors in training.
· Manage the budget devolved from the Postgraduate Dean.
· Have a system in place for approving and monitoring residents’ Study Leave.
· Provide an annual report of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education activity in the Trust.
NHSEWTE Responsibilities
· Ensure NHSEWTE is aware of important educational issues or problems at the Trust which may affect Medical and Dental training.
· Assist development of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education in NHSEWTE as well as the Trust as an active Clinician and Educator.
· Advise NHSEWTE of practical issues and developments in the Trust that may have implications on the future planning and funding of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.
· Ensuring return of EXIT reports to Postgraduate Dean to support revalidation for trainee doctors.
· Be involved with NHSEWTE and Workforce Development Confederations as appropriate in the delivery and monitoring of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.
· Be a member of HEWM Clinical Tutors Committee.
· Be a member of NHSEWTE Committees concerned with monitoring and delivering Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education as appropriate.
· Represent Clinical Tutors / Directors of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education if invited to sit on Appointment Advisory Committees for new Clinical Tutors..

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Medical or Dental Practitioner with Postgraduate Qualification
- Previous experience of Medical Education e.g. College Tutor
Desirable criteria
- Consultant who currently holds a minimum of 5 sessions of programmed activities within the Trust
- Diploma or other qualification in Medical Education
