UHNM are the proud recipients of a Motor Neuron Disease Association (MNDA) Lead Research Nurse grant. As such we have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated individual, who enjoys a challenge, to join our expanding research team at UHNM. The role will include facilitating the delivery of commercial and non-commercial research trials in Motor Neuron Disease within the neurosciences department/division, and to integrate with the existing research team to further develop skills within research, contributing to improving and changing the future care of patients. We are seeking a confident and experienced senior registered nurse, with experience in the field of Neurology, ideally Motor Neuron Disease to act as an ambassador for promoting research utilisation and best practice, as well as liaising with all healthcare and research professionals to provide the best possible specialist care for their patients within the neurosciences division, and wider specialities when needed.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as a Lead Research Nurse within an established management team, which involves recruiting patient participants into clinical trials, carrying out trial activity in line with the ethically approved protocol and in accordance with legislation. You will provide leadership skills and specialist knowledge to manage the running of clinical research trials, support allied healthcare professionals and staff members to deliver on a wide range of clinical trials. You will be responsible for meeting the clinical research delivery of specialty related trials, and for continuing, supporting and raising recruitment into MND studies, including commercial and non-commercial studies. You will work closely within the MNDA and support the development of the National Research Nurse Network therefore the ability to travel is a requirement.

Some future Motor Neuron Disease drug trials are likely to involve lumbar puncture for either monitoring of biomarkers and/or delivery of intrathecal treatments. The ability to perform lumbar punctures would therefore be highly desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with active NMC Registration
  • Completed Honours Degree in Nursing, research or ethics
  • Experience in the field of Neurology, Motor Neuron Disease
  • Training in ICH-GCP clinical trial standards and the detailed trial-specific rules it provides for administration and record keeping
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of formal leadership training

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant clinical experience in supporting, delivering and leading clinical research within health and care
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to meet the changing clinical and research study requirements
  • The ability to present and receive complex, sensitive information to and for patients and groups of healthcare staff
  • Knowledge and experience of caring for people living with MND/terminal illnesses or a strong willingness to learn
  • Previous experience of formal and informal teaching of people, patients and staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of advanced highly specialised theoretical and practical clinical and research skills beyond the normal scope of nursing practice
