Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Gynae-Oncology Assistant Cancer Navigator to join the department, we are seeking someone that has excellent interpersonal skills and a calm and methodical approach.
The Assistant Cancer Navigator assists and supports the Gynae-Oncology Cancer Navigator for the Gynae-Oncology department as well as providing some secretarial services to the consultants and their teams. Please see the job description for full details of the role. The post holder will need to be flexible and adaptable in this busy working environment.
You will be expected to have an excellent telephone manner, be courteous and efficient and have an excellent working knowledge of Word, Excel spreadsheets and email. Previous experience of Cerner/Millennium would be advantageous, but not essential as full training will be given. This is an office based role.

The Assistant Cancer Navigator assists and supports the Gynae Oncology Cancer Navigator for the Gynae Oncology department on behalf of the consultants and their teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Responsible for assisting with the booking of preoperative assessment and outpatient appointments for all new referrals on a tracked cancer pathway.
• Assist with uploading referral documents onto Cerner and adding patients to the departments own database
• Demonstrate knowledge of specific hospital procedures and software programmes.
• Assist in investigating reasons for patients breaching, updating PTL for breach prevention.
• Assist in the identification of related problems and their resolution.
• To receive referrals from within the Trust and from external hospitals for cancer treatment management
• Recording clinical outcomes for data purposes
• Request imaging for patients and prepare clinics
• To undertake flexible secretarial support to a team of consultants acting as a reliable point of contact and providing short term and emergency secretarial cover during planned or unexpected absence or peak workloads. Secretarial duties will include producing/amending and forwarding of patient letters and other correspondence in line with current standards and using dedicated software DictateIT.
• Arrange / request appointments as required, and ensuring that all follow up appointments are booked after MDT review of patients histology.
• To book patients surgeries onto the hospital system at the direction of the medical team only.
• Manage the implications of annual leave, organise the amendment of clinics, other fixed commitments and arrange cover for consultants during their absence to ensure maximum clinic and theatre capacity for breaching patients.

Essential criteria
- NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- A level or equivalent experience
- RSA Typing qualification or equivalent experience
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 1 year experience managing and organising own workload
- Proven experience in administration or dealing with patients/customers
- Experience within an environment undergoing change
- Ability to make decisions autonomously, when required, on difficult issues, working to tight and often changing timescales
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills OR/AND any other relevant IT Systems applicable to the applicant
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in a hospital environment or dealing with patients/customers
