Consultant in Geriatric and General Internal Medicine with an interest in Frailty/Integration,  Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, London

Our Care of the Elderly team is looking to recruit three full-time substantive Consultants in Geriatric and General Medicine.

We aim to provide individualised person-centred care in the right setting at the right time.

These appointments are anticipated to commence as soon as possible and are based at St Helier Hospital with the potential to work at Epsom Hospital too.  The successful candidates will support the further development of services aimed at the providing excellent care to the older person from community to hospital and back home.  The Trust is firmly committed to improving its services to older people.  

We are looking for colleagues with broad geriatric medicine expertise, an interest in frailty and an enthusiasm for change and service development. This is a fantastic time to join our department as we continue to develop our services with an integrated strategy for frailty across the acute and community services.

The post is a 10 PA post with additional on-call commitment

Main duties of the job

The main duty of the role is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to our patients.

Our ideal candidate will be dynamic, enthusiastic, flexible, and will bring new ideas to help reshape and grow our services  for the older person.

Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a University teaching hospital with strong links to the neighbouring St George’s Medical School, University London. There are many opportunities to get involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

We request that successful applicants must have relevant UK and NHS experience in Geriatric and General Internal Medicine with full GMC registration and already have CCT, or be within 6 months of obtaining  their CCT.

Working for our organisation

We manage both an inpatient bed base and outpatient services at each site. 

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large 768 bed acute Trust serving South West London and Surrey. It comprises one acute hospital in Carshalton and a District General Hospital in Epsom, a dedicated children’s hospital, Elective Orthopaedic Centre and a private patient unit and provides services from a number of support hospitals.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for Geriatric and General Internal Medicine or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP or equivalent
  • UK and relevant level NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research

Clinical, Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for General Medicine
  • Audit/Research experience
  • Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CESR
  • Supervision of post-graduate trainees
  • Personal time management skills
  • Clinical governance experience
  • Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity with issues of service organisation and development

Teaching & Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to contribute to change management
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
  • Ability to critically review research
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors
