Job overview

As an integral member of the CSSD team, the post holder will assist in providing a specialised Decontamination service for all medical devices to all wards and departments throughout the Trust & across all sites e.g. Theatres Services, Day Surgery Services, Short Stay Units, Treatment Centres, Maternity & Women’s Services, as well as all external customers. Contributing to the ongoing clinical care of patients. The role may involve exposure to blood and body fluids.

Main duties of the job

  • Work in accordance with all trust & departmental procedures, work instructions and Quality Management Systems.
  • Reprocess reusable Medical Devices in a controlled environment.
  • Disassemble and manually clean equipment as per manufacturer’s instructions ready for washing.  
  • Receive and prepare contaminated equipment for decontamination as per manufacturer’s instructions through automated washers.
  • Use manual dexterity and concentration for the disassembly and reassembly of the reusable medical devices in accordance with Manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Load packaged equipment into the sterilisers, unload and despatch.
  • Safely operate decontamination equipment and undertake routine testing in line with current guidance and training as required.
  • Report any defects or discrepancies found with the equipment to the Team Leaders.
  • Scan instrument trays into the Electronic Tracking System to enable traceability of the instrumentation. Under limited supervision meet the demands of the Department’s busy workload whilst consistently achieving high quality standards which will be measured by in-process checks and non-conformance reports.  
  • Maintain the Decontamination Department’s, equipment in accordance with the Department’s Policy and report any malfunctions appropriately.  
  • Ensure safe handling of all re-useable medical devices and device sets.
  • Be involved, where possible in the contingency utilisation plans for Decontamination across all Trust sites.
