Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our Bacteriology Department within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services, based at Wexham Park Hospital.
We are looking for a scientist with a genuine interest in microbiology who can work effectively as part of a busy, friendly team. The successful applicant will be HCPC registered, have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio, and ideally bring some experience of working as a Biomedical Scientist within a microbiology setting.
This role requires a team player who demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and a proactive approach to delivering and improving our service. In return, you will be supported to develop your knowledge and skills within a progressive and supportive department that values continuous professional development.
Main duties of the job
- Under supervision perform the diagnostic microbiology examination and reporting of specimens received to aid patient treatment and care.
- To develop and use interpretive skills on culture plates and complex analysers combined with the Laboratory Information Management System to deliver the diagnostic microbiology service to our users.
- Participate in the formal and informal staff meetings thereby helping to improve communication, information, objective, plans and development transfer throughout the department and Trust.
- To study towards the completion of the Specialist portfolio.
- To maintain a current record of CPD activities.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.
- IBMS Certificate of Competence
- BSc Biomedical Science or equivalent
- Willing to undergo relevant training to ensure sound relevant knowledge.
- Educational qualification in mathematics.
Desirable criteria
- IBMS member at Associate or Licentiate level.
- ECDL
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Organisational skills
- Able to communicate complex information
- Able to use and maintain equipment
- IT lierate
- Able to understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures
- Good time management
- Ability to work to departmental or section deadlines.
