Job overview

An exciting new opportunity has arisen to work as an Assistant Practitioner AHP Band 4  within Northumberland Head Injuries service (NHIS).  NHIS provide community based neuro rehabilitation for people 16 years and over  who live in the Northumberland area and have sustained a traumatic brain injury.

NHIS is a well established multi-disciplinary team (MDT) who are passionate about delivering evidence based neurological rehabilitation to achieve best outcomes.  This exciting post will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to be part of the MDT, as well as opportunities to develop themselves within the area of neurological rehabilitation within  community settings.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post working under the direction of the qualified Therapists within the MDT. You will assist the Therapists to assess and deliver therapy and activity within the objectives of the treatment plan. In addition there will be opportunities to develop skills through the provision of group therapy sessions as well as individually-tailored therapy sessions to service users.

You will require excellent communication, time management and organisational skills and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team.

You will be supported by experienced Therapists and will receive regular supervision and opportunities for training and professional development.

NHIS is a multidisciplinary team working in partnership with numerous agencies, including secondary care and third sector organisations. In order to succeed in this role you will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to demonstrate a calm and professional approach in challenging situations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist the therapists to plan, design and develop rehabilitation plans and therapy and intervention activities within the objectives of the treatment plan. 

Use specialist technical and creative skills to facilitate the preparation and implementation of AHP occupation/communication focused tools and approaches as a member of the MDT in order to promote recovery, wellbeing and maximise independence.

Deliver 1:1 and group treatment to patients monitoring their progress and making minor adaptations as required within sessions. 

Contribute their observations of the communication and occupational barriers and strengths of the individuals based on a foundation theoretical knowledge of communication, language and occupation.

Education & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Foundation degree in applied social studies or alternative (NVQ/BTEC/QCF) with additional training to diploma level equivalent in the speciality field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills applicable to the post

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of working with individuals with neurological conditions
  • Experience of working in a collaborative & MDT environment
  • Experience of working with people with complex health needs
