Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Exercise Therapy Team, working at St Nicholas Hospital and Hadrian Clinic in Newcastle. The in-patient wards at St Nicolas Hospital and Hadrian Clinic are assessment and treatment centres providing psychiatric intensive care. The role involves working into acute and rehabilitation admission wards for patients over the age of 18 with a mental health illness who require assessment and treatment by a multi-disciplinary team.
The Exercise Therapy team prescribe exercise as an intervention for the physical and mental health needs of our service users. The role involves developing therapeutic relationships with our service users to promote the benefits of physical activity and supporting them to make positive lifestyle changes.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of the role is to assist the exercise therapists to provide a range of exercise groups as part of a weekly timetable of activities. The exercise therapy assistant will work closely with the exercise therapist to support our service users to achieve their individual goals.

Exercise Therapy work as part of a multi-disciplinary team therefore the post holder will be required to liaise with other professionals regarding exercise therapy treatment plans, physical health triggers, patient progress and discharge planning. They will attend ward meetings as required, to provide feedback.

Essential criteria
- Experience of working in a gym environment
- Experience of delivery exercise groups
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with patients with mental health conditions
- Experience of working in clinical settings
Education and Qualification
Essential criteria
- Minimum of reps level 2 – gym instructor and level 3 –exercise referral or personal trainer qualifications
- Relevant exercise qualifications – circuit training/kettlebells/box-fit etc
- BASES membership
- Maths and English Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent
Skills and Competencies
Essential criteria
- Organisation and Time management

- Communication and IT skills
