Children’s Carer - Band 3

Full time/part time /term time only

Investment into The Birches Respite Team has created the opportunity to recruit Band 3 Children’s Carers. The team supports children with complex health needs in their own homes, school and The Birches Respite Unit. The service delivers care 7 days a week over 24 hours so a willingness to work shifts especially night shifts is essential.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve delivering care to several children in a variety of settings including the respite unit, schools and homes. The successful candidates will be trained in a variety of clinical skills such as gastrostomy feeding, suction , oxygen therapy using a competency based framework. You will receive continuing support in the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will need a good level of basic education including basic computer skills and at least NVQ level 3 in a child related subject. Experience working with children who are ventilated or have complex health problems would be beneficial but not essential. It is also important that the successful candidates are innovative in providing play and learning opportunities for the children and young people the team support so a sense of fun and enthusiasm is essential.

We are looking for someone with compassion and commitment. You will need to have excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team. In return you will be part of a service that is warm and friendly and is committed to the children we support. The service recently received an overall rating of Good by the CQC and an Outstanding for care and compassion of which we are rightly proud. QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • NNEB/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a child related subject
  • Good level of basic education and literacy

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates an awareness of the need for knowledge of Health & Safety principles
  • Good verbal and written skills

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Ability to stay calm in stressful situations
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working with children with complex health needs

OTHER

Essential criteria
  • Good level of comprehension
  • Willing to work between home and education environment
  • Willingness to train to develop the role
  • Flexibility with working patterns
  • Car owner/driver, or suitable alternative transport to enable you to undertake the job - and be prepared to be insured for business use. (It is unlikely that public transport will meet this requirement). If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act
