Applications are invited for the post of a 12-month fixed term Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust.
We are looking for a dynamic doctor for the post of speciality doctor (fixed term) within a well-established Ophthalmology service. A minimum of 3 years comprehensive ophthalmology experience is essential of which a minimum of 2 years U.K. Ophthalmology experience is essential.
This post offers significant clinical, laser and surgical exposure with the opportunity to gain subspecialty experience. The post is especially suitable for those seeking to gain CESR and get varied subspecialty experience. The post offers independent surgical, laser and clinical sessions. Research, teaching and Audit is actively encouraged and supported in the department with ample opportunities. The department has several NIHR portfolio studies in progress offering additional research opportunities.
The post is offered with a job plan of 10 Professional Activities (PAs). On-call duties (1:8-1:9) are offered based on relevant experience and departmental need.

Main duties of the job
As a valued member of the Ophthalmology Team, the post holder will be involved in a wide range of sub specialism including;
- Outpatient Activity – Undertaking general, specialist, cataract clinics
- EERS/Emergency Duties (Eye Emergency Referral Service) - Providing referral triage, emergency and urgent diagnosis and treatment. Including Liaison with senior medical staff, either registrars, non-consultant career grade doctors or consultants regarding all cases requiring admission or general anaesthesia. Assistance of senior medical staff with emergency surgery. Provide cover for colleagues on leave as indicated in the duty rota. It may be necessary to attend other hospitals in order to see patients on an emergency basis. Performing duties during emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, consultation where practicable with colleagues both senior and junior. As stressed by this Secretary of State, it has been agreed that they will perform such duties with the understanding that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional.
- Theatre Activity – Provide support in theatres and undertake independent theatre sessions in line with abilities.
- Ward Rounds - Attending ward rounds and examination of pre-and postoperative patients. Ward duties to cover leave and provide continuity of care.

- Three satisfactory references Development through the audit process At least 3 years’ comprehensive experience in Ophthalmology of which at least 2 years is in the U.K is a minimum requirement. Ability to work independently in clinics.
Desirable criteria
- More than 3 years experience in ophthalmology Experience of service development Evidence of involvement with research. More than 2 years UK experience. Laser and /or intravitreal injection experience Ability to perform independent cataract surgery
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Commitment to continuing professional development and Ophthalmology
Desirable criteria
- FRCOphth or equivalent by knowledge. Refraction certificate
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work well with colleagues and to relate to patients / relatives in an understanding and sympathetic manner.
