#JoinTeamEliot

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team at George Eliot Hospital. This post is suitable for applicants currently working as a senior paediatric doctor, at registrar level, ST4 and above.

The successful candidate must be able to  independently assess, manage and discharge patients, supervise junior doctors, and provide clinical leadership within the paediatric team. You will be expected to demonstrate decision-making and leadership equivalent to middle-grade level.

A strong awareness of child safeguarding principles and the ability to identify, escalate and manage safeguarding concerns is essential.  You should be able to demonstrable experience in recognising and managing child safeguarding concerns and ability to escalate appropriately and liaise with safeguarding teams and senior clinicians.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a candidate confident in managing patients within SCBU and neonatal settings at middle‑grade level, including initial stabilisation, escalation, and coordination with consultants. GEH has no Paediatric Inpatient Ward, and ambulances convey children directly to UHCW.

A Children’s Assessment Unit provides ambulatory care with pathways for ED, urgent care, and paediatric presentations, with plans to develop a Short Stay Assessment Unit. Transfers needing inpatient paediatric care follow a well‑established pathway to UHCW. Children arriving via walk‑in may become critically unwell; the GEH resuscitation team works with the KIDS PICU retrieval service, following a shared transfer policy across Paediatrics, ED, and Anaesthetics.

The SCBU cares for babies from 32 weeks to term and accepts step‑down babies from LMNS partners. The Maternity Department manages about 2,400 births annually and 300 SCBU admissions across eight cots.

The unit is part of the South West Midlands Neonatal Network and Coventry & Warwickshire LMNS. Babies requiring LNU or NICU care are transferred in‑utero or postnatally via the regional Neonatal Transport Service.
