The post is for a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry to join a team of consultants providing comprehensive acute inpatient mental health services to the Coventry and Warwickshire localities; to participate in providing postgraduate training to the Coventry and Warwickshire Junior Doctor Training Scheme and undergraduate education for medical students from Warwick Medical School. You will require leadership and team building skills as well as clinical experience and educational ability.

To provide assessment, diagnosis and supervision of management for inpatients from Coventry and Warwickshire [population approx 1 million including 152,000 over 65 population]. This is a varied population, covering areas with significant urban deprivation, market towns and rural areas. Responsibilities include:
Ø assessment of risk of self-harm, harm to others or risk of neglect
Ø where there is diagnostic uncertainty or complexity
Ø where the interaction of potential illness and personality factors need to be evaluated
To evaluate and give advice on the interaction between physical/organic factors and other factors, including co-ordinating any necessary examination, investigation and referral as required.
To take a lead role in multidisciplinary reviews.
To assess the need for, initiate and review the prescription of medication used to treat mental health problems, to monitor progress and provide guidance to acute/ community consultants and/or GPs about continued prescribing after discharge.
To act as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act, provide reports for and attend Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings and ensure appropriate 117 After-Care is in place for patients discharged from Section 3 or Section 37.
To work in liaison with community consultants and mental health teams over after-care and discharge plans for acute-care patients, especially for patients subject to Supervised Community Treatment.

Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) provides comprehensive all age mental health services for around one million citizens of Coventry and Warwickshire. In addition, it provides specialist learning disability services for a substantial part of the West Midlands, regional services in forensic LD and eating disorders, and community health services to Coventry.
CWPT is a teaching Trust with close links to Warwick and Coventry Universities. Medical students from Warwick Medical School (WMS) complete placements in the trust. There are strong links to the Academic Department of Psychiatry at WMS.
The Trust has a strong tradition of involvement in postgraduate medical education and has a number of trainees at all levels on placement from the HEE West Midlands. These include speciality trainees from the West Midlands School of Psychiatry, VTS trainees from the West Midlands School of General Practice and foundation year 1 and 2 trainees.

The Trust believes that high quality medical appointments are vital for the effective and safe delivery of clinical services.

- GMC registration and inclusion on the specialist register in Mental Health, or Speciality Trainees within 6 months of completing CCT
- A postgraduate qualification in Psychiatry e.g. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
