An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Dermatologist to join Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a forward-thinking organisation committed to delivering outstanding patient care, education, research, and innovation.

Our Dermatology Department provides a comprehensive range of medical dermatology, skin cancer, biologic, paediatric dermatology services to a diverse population across West Yorkshire.

 The successful candidate will join a highly motivated multidisciplinary team based at St Luke’s Hospital dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care while embracing new technologies and service developments.

As a Consultant Dermatologist, you will join a forward-thinking and ambitious department that is leading the way in digital dermatology. This is a unique opportunity to help shape and develop one of the most innovative skin cancer pathways in the NHS, influencing service delivery at both regional and national levels.

You will work alongside a highly skilled and supportive multidisciplinary team with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, education, research, and continuous quality improvement. The post holder will have responsibility for providing a Dermatology service in conjunction with consultant colleagues.   This is a 23 Month Fixed Term post 1.0WTE covering 10PA’s at the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust working at St Lukes Hospital covering 5 days per week Monday to Friday.

The position comprises 10 PAs and cover for urgent inpatient referrals and GP queries in working hours is also anticipated, but there is no formal out of hours cover required for this post on a regular basis.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service. The post holder will be expected to undertake the following duties:

To provide outpatient clinic and procedure lists for inflammatory skin disease and skin cancer patients in the adult and paediatric population.

To be an active member of the skin cancer multidisciplinary team, with regular attendance at the alternate week MDT meetings.

 To provide support, training and governance to nurses and any junior medical staff in the team. Support for local GPSI , GPs in training and students from regional hospitals is also anticipated.

 To provide a comprehensive Dermatology service, in collaboration with other Dermatologists, including inpatient care and referrals, outpatient referrals and treatment and telephone or electronic advice and guidance to local GPs.

We have two main hospital sites:  Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital.  Maternity Services are centralised at the maternity unit on the Bradford Royal Infirmary site which includes our neonatal unit. The main theatres and emergency admissions are located at Bradford Royal Infirmary while St Luke’s Hospital provides a large outpatient facility and wards for therapy and rehabilitation. In 2021/22 our Trust services delivered 5,525 babies, performed 13,102 operations in theatre and handled 423,154 outpatient appointments. We had 108,503 attendances at our Emergency Department

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

All staff in the Department are managerially accountable to the Clinical Director who has overall responsibility for the services.

The post holder will be required to support the Lead Dermatologist in policy and strategy development as a member of the Clinical Business Unit Team.

The post holder will work within the Trust’s framework for Corporate Governance including standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.

As part of the Clinical Business Unit, assist in the cost effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non-pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.

Provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge in liaison with consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time). 

Applicants will be expected to be Members of the Royal College of Physicians or have equivalent experience and training and must be fully registered and licensed to practise with the General Medical Council. Applicants need to have completed their respective CCT or be within 6 months of doing so. The post is open to people who wish to work flexibly.

  • Member of the British College of Dermatology (UK) or equivalent

  • Experience in Dermatology Specialty. UK NHS experience at minimum of 2 years
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of sub-specialty interests would be beneficial
  • Experience of supervising and teaching junior doctors, nurses and students
  • Higher degree (eg MD, PHD or equivalent)
  • Additional postgraduate training (eg clinical research or medical education)
  • Willingness to work flexibly
  • Willingness to contribute to service improvements. Interest in teaching.
