Job overview

This post will be fixed term until for a year to cover a gap on the Ophthalmology specialty registrar rota. The post holder will attend Macular clinics, laser clinics and on call casualty clinics, theatres and participate in the on call rota.

Sessions include:

  • Theatre Sessions
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Visiting other units subject to approval by supervising consultant and clinical director

Main duties of the job

The jobholder must comply at all times with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the Trust’s Risk Incident Reporting System.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

All employees have a personal responsibility to comply with Trust and departmental Infection Prevention and Control policies to protect their own health, the health of patients, visitors and other employees and to prevent health care associated infections.  This includes a requirement to maintain a safe, clean and tidy work environment and to complete mandatory Infection Prevention and Control Training as provided by the Foundation Trust. All clinical staff must ensure rigorous and consistent compliance with standard infection control precautions including Hand hygiene, dress code and use of personal protective equipment and other clinical care policies and protocols applicable to infection prevention and control.  Employees are required to challenge poor performance or poor practice in relation to infection prevention and report any breaches using relevant Trust procedures such as the Incident reporting system.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring they undertake the appropriate level of training in accordance with the safeguarding policy training strategy and that they are aware of and work within the safeguarding policies of the Trust

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience relevant to the specialty
  • Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely Commitment for managing professional development
  • Clinical governance / audit experience
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk
  • Out of hours experience relevant to job.
  • Experience in the specialty beyond ST3 or equivalent

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: - that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or - have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. IELTS certificate to be presented at interview. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.
  • Acute care safe – up to date ALS
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Knowledge Exam
  • ALS Instructors Certificate

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post [In some specialties this level of specialty or core training may not provide the right skills to perform effectively in a specialty doctor post].
  • Specialty specific requirements eg MRCP, FRCS, etc where appropriate
