NHS AfC: Band 8b

Our Organisation

The NHS is building a culture that is positive, compassionate and inclusive – and we all have our part to play.

As employers we are committed to protecting and promoting the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all our colleagues. This underpins our values as set out in the NHS Constitution and supports us to be an Employer of Choice, while helping our colleagues to deliver high quality services for our patients and communities.

As a flexible employer, we want to support you to work in a way that is best for the NHS, our patients and you. Talk to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that’s a job share, part time, hybrid working or another flexible pattern. In addition, although the role advertised may have a ‘home’ office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

We are an accredited Living Wage Employer which means that every colleague working for our organisation and third-party contractors will earn a real Living Wage.  We are one of over 15,000 organisations, who voluntarily chose to pay the real Living Wage.

Job overview

Are you ready to join a team of experts transforming healthcare technology across England? Do you want to make a meaningful impact on the health of the nation & improve outcomes for patients nationwide?

Given the wide range of services we support we’re looking for Solution Architects with experience in areas such as cloud-based systems, big data and analytics, next-generation networks, APIs, platforms, cyber security, and digital strategy development. If that sounds like you, we may have the perfect opportunity. Our work directly benefits patients & NHS staff at a national scale.

This is an exciting time to join NHS England as a Solution Architect. With the recent publication of the NHS 10-Year Plan - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/10-year-health-plan-for-england-fit-for-the-future - digital transformation is at the heart of how we’ll reshape services.

The Solution Architecture function delivers a range of services to internal & external stakeholders, including architecture design, technical consultancy & ownership of large-scale NHS programmes. As a Solution Architect, you’ll typically support a Senior Architect on national systems or domains such as the NHS App.

What's in it for you:

  • Be part of a dynamic team using data & digital technology to transform health and care.
  • Build experience in a role where your work has a direct and positive impact.
  • Access a wide range of learning & development opportunities to support your personal & professional growth.

Main duties of the job

We have opportunities across several key areas:

Applications – Work on the next generation of NHS England applications, including the NHS App, NHS.uk, Urgent & Emergency Care, and General Practice. Help deliver solutions that benefit both end users and the public.

Security - Influence stakeholders on the value of Security Architecture in a complex, regulated environment. Ensure data is handled securely and digital services operate with integrity and efficiency.

Infrastructure - Contribute to our sustainable hybrid cloud strategy, support next-gen network innovations, and help drive digital collaboration through the Microsoft arrangement.

Platforms – Develop the next generation of NHS England’s application services, APIs, event-driven systems, and registries. These national platforms share data, improve healthcare, and save lives.

As a key member of the architecture team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking ownership of specific architecture components, ensuring alignment with standards and enterprise frameworks
  • Collaborating within agile teams alongside service designers, user researchers, engineers, and clinicians
  • Acting as a technical contact point for stakeholders and suppliers.

Working for our organisation

The NHS England board have set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, which will inform the detailed design work and we will achieve this purpose by:

  • Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
  • Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
  • Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
  • Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
  • Delivering value for money.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

If you are successful at interview, we will run an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) in the Electronic Staff Record system (ESR). This transfer gathers valuable information from a previous or current NHS employer to support the onboarding process, including; statutory and mandatory competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement.  You will have the opportunity throughout the recruitment process to inform us if you do not consent.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post of Solution Architect has been awarded a Recruitment and Retention Premia (RRP) in response to current labour market conditions. In recognition of this, the role attracts an additional monthly RRP payment equal to 15% per annum.

Please be aware that RRP is non-contractual and subject to review

Please note that the reason for the fixed term of this contract is - Short-term vacancy.

Earlier this year the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the Department. The purpose of this change is to create a smaller, more strategic centre which will reduce duplication and eliminate waste.
