Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic orthopaedic team as an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) specialising in shoulder and elbow conditions, working 30 hours per week.
As an APP, you will work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, delivering expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex musculoskeletal presentations. You will play a pivotal role in shaping and leading the shoulder and elbow pathway across Airedale and Skipton sites, working closely with orthopaedic consultants and therapy colleagues.

The post holder will:
- Work closely with medical and nursing Orthopaedic colleagues to ensure high quality patient care.
- Be accountable for the quality and safety of advanced and highly skilled assessment and management of patients with a variety of complex, acute and chronic orthopaedic presentations.
- Have a key role in promoting the integration of physiotherapy services within an orthopaedic context.
- Be prepared to work flexibly in terms of time and workload to meet service needs.
- Be professionally accountable but will have access to clinical supervision from a senior clinical practitioner.
- Take a role in overseeing the physiotherapy rehabilitation of patients presenting with more complex shoulder & elbow problems.
- To oversee the development of the physiotherapy provision for shoulder & elbow pathologies across the trusts patch.

As an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) in the Shoulder and Elbow Service, you will:
- Work autonomously at an advanced clinical level, delivering expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with complex shoulder and elbow conditions.
- Lead on the development and delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care pathways in collaboration with orthopaedic consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Provide clinical leadership and supervision to physiotherapy colleagues, supporting service development and professional growth.
- Contribute to service evaluation, audit, and research to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with national guidance and best practice.
- Actively participate in teaching and training across the team and wider service, promoting a culture of learning and excellence.
- Support the integration of physiotherapy within orthopaedic services, ensuring seamless patient care across Airedale and Skipton sites.
- Champion patient-centred care, ensuring safety, dignity, and high standards are maintained at all time
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in physiotherapy
- Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in physiotherapy
- MSc in an appropriate related area or equivalent level of training.
Desirable criteria
- Certificate in Managing Health Services or equivalent
- Member of relevant Professional special interest groups/organisations
- Completion of course in Professional Practice education
- Qualification in Independent Prescribing
- Qualification in the administration of joint and soft tissue injections.
- Completion of additional training at master’s level.
- Completion of IRMER training
- Surgical consent training

Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration experience and significant experience working at band 7 level
- Special clinical interest in shoulder and elbow -demonstrated by membership of regional and national SIG and ongoing specific CPD.
- Experience of instigating and interpreting investigations and initiating appropriate plans of care for patients.
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Experience of multidisciplinary guideline development, implementation and audit
- Experience of clinical supervision both as supervisee and supervisor
- Experience of teaching, assessing, coaching and supporting learning to a variety of groups.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in APP role, ideally in shoulder and elbow orthopaedics.
- Recent experience of leadership /management role including leading on projects/ service improvements
- Experience of taking part in or leading on Projects/ service improvements
- Experience of taking part in or leading an audit or research project
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Specialist level of knowledge and clinical reasoning skills to support expert clinical practice in shoulder and elbow management.
- Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working with key stakeholders in orthopaedics and MSK Physiotherapy and AHP services.
- Knowledge of clinical standards and ability to implement and audit these in the team
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, audit and research
