Job overview

As our triage and treatment nurse, you will be expected to work largely autonomously to make triage decisions for patients and to help patients find a more appropriate care provider if they do not meet the clinical criteria for a Minor Injury Unit.

Patients often need to be redirected from the MIU to other places of care if their needs fall outside our scope of practice e.g. GP, emergency department, pharmacy, urgent treatment centre.

Patients who are appropriate to attend the MIU will be assigned a triage category dependant on their level of need. This will be completed in accordance with Manchester Triage. This will help inform other clinicians of the urgency these patients need review and treatment.

You will provide a safe, patient centred, effective service to patients and service users.  You will also be expected to provide some treatments including wound care, plaster of Paris application and also be expected to help care for critically ill patients until transfer to hospital. The Triage Nurse will work under supervision of an Urgent Care Clinician.

Triage/Treatment nurses will also be expected to supervise unwell patients who are waiting for ambulance transfer out of the department and onto another establishment.

·         Refer patients from MIU to relevant care provider

·         Have a good working knowledge of safeguarding issues for children and adults

·         Ensure that accurate, contemporaneous documentation is achieved

·         Be accountable for care using research based knowledge to inform practice

·         Give medications under Patient Group Direction (PGD) instruction

·         Ensure stores are ordered on time and ensure cupboards are well stocked

·         Workload management and plan ongoing care options

·         Follow all relevant policies and standard operating procedures
