Job overview
This post is based at the Freeman Hospital and covers elective orthopaedic surgery. The duties involve work in operating theatres, clinics, admissions unit, supervising junior doctors and specialist nurse practitioners, care of inpatients and support the Arthroplasty Service. Evening on-calls till 8PM are non-resident.
Elective Orthopaedic Surgery is based at the Freeman Hospital, while the Orthopaedic Trauma Unit and the Spinal Service are sited at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The Fracture Clinic and trauma ward are at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, along with elective and trauma theatres. Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre and has all the required trauma services. Elective outpatient clinics are held in the dedicated Musculoskeletal Outpatient Department at Freeman Hospital.
Main duties of the job
This post is designed to offer arthroplasty experience to a Orthopaedic trainee who is interested to gain further experience in Elective Arthroplasty and get registrar level experience in Trauma working in a MTC.
This post is based at the Freeman Hospital and covers elective orthopaedic surgery. The duties involve work in operating theatres, clinics, admissions unit, supervising junior doctors in the care of inpatients and support the Arthroplasty service.
The post will support elective Orthopaedic service at Freeman Hospital and will be involved in the On Call Rota at the Freeman Hospital during days and cover nights and weekends at RVI.
There will be commitment with ongoing MDT, research and Audit. The appointee will be expected to participate in ongoing research projects. The appointee will be encourages to complete projects should publish in peer reviewed journals. The candidate will be given support and guidance in career progression.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
Where possible, the applicant will work at the level equivalent to specialist registrar grade/ Fellow. The clinical duties of the post include;
· Clinics: new patients, pre-admission & review clinics.
· Pre-operative work up including pre-surgical planning using templating software
· Theatres: assisting & operating under close supervision only after satisfactory assessment on job.
· Registrar on-calls at RVI (nights and weekend days), flexible Trauma working
· Supervising junior doctors in the day to day care of inpatients
· Care of the patients during their stay in hospital. Daily ward rounds and reporting to supervising consultant.
· Freeman on-call cover including weekends and evenings, including Weekend ward rounds when on-call.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full registration with the GMC at time of application.
- Broad range of experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degrees including MSc, PhD, MD or equivalent
- Publications in the relevant area
- Keen to develop research skills.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical knowledge and Skills equal to a ST3+ T&O.
- Experience of Trauma and Trauma on-calls.
- Experience in primary knee / hip arthroplasty.
- NHS UK experience.
- Experience at ST3-8 level in UK.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable criteria
- Completed an Orthopaedic Training Program in UK / Overseas.
- Up to date Log book showing summery of the procedures performed.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior staff.
- Ability to teach clinical skills.
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit projects.
