SPINAL SURGERY (StRH Grade) 

Applications are invited for the above Spinal posts vacant to start 5th August  2026 to work at the University Hospital of Wales, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales and University Hospital Llandough.

The post holder will work with nine dedicated Spinal Orthopaedic Consultants who are actively involved in all aspects of spinal surgery ranging from degenerative cervical and lumbar disease to tumour and scoliosis in adults and children.  The Welsh Centre for Spinal Surgery & Trauma is a recognised AO Spine Reference Centre and a Spinal Training Interface Group accredited centre.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in all aspects of spinal surgery and there is an active research programme in place including basic science laboratory facilities.  The Centre is associated with Cardiff University and excellent postgraduate facilities are available. 

The Post Holder will be expected to work at Senior Specialty Registrar level and will participate in the Spinal on call rota at University Hospital of Wales. 

The post is not educationally approved and will therefore not attract a National Training Number. 

We are a teaching health board with close links to Cardiff University. The University boasts a high profile teaching, research and development role within the UK and abroad. Together we are training the next generation of medical professionals.

References will be required to cover a minimum of three years of previous employment and/or training

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCS Orth or SN or equivalent
  • MBBS Certificate
  • Current GMC Registration with Full License to Practice
  • Training in Radiation Protection or agreement to attend next available course
Desirable criteria
  • Intercalated Degree
  • MSc or PHD
  • Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions etc.,)
  • AO Spine Diploma or equivalent
  • ATLS Instructor or Training the Trainer or equivalent.

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • 6 months postgraduate experience in Spinal Surgery (Higher Surgical Trainee or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as Senior Spinal trainee or Spinal fellow or equivalent

Skill, Knowledge, Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Up to date with current medical practices
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to perform basic spinal surgical procedures under supervision.
  • Leadership skills experience, or course or qualification or equivalent.

Special Interests

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of presentation peer reviewed meetings or publication in peer reviewed journal/s
  • Quality Improvement/Audit project or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Research specific to spine surgery
  • Evidence of completed Audit loop.
