Job overview

The role involves handling calls from patients, visitors, and colleagues across the organisation, ensuring everyone receives a courteous, respectful, and helpful response.

The Switchboard is a fast‑paced and varied department, offering the opportunity to carry out a wide range of tasks as part of a supportive team. While the role does not involve face‑to‑face contact with patients, you will play an important part in supporting them by responding to their enquiries over the phone with empathy and professionalism.

The team is also responsible for managing internal emergency calls, including fire and panic alarms, helping to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

In addition to call handling, the role includes a range of administrative duties that support the effective day‑to‑day running of the service.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing internal and external calls in a professional and supportive manner
  • Responding to enquiries from colleagues  at the reception desk
  • Handling internal emergency calls calmly and efficiently
  • Acting appropriately in response to fire alarms and other safety alerts
  • Supporting colleagues by assessing faulty pagers and arranging replacements when required
