Are you organised, hands-on, and good with people? If so, we’d love to hear from you! Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS) is looking for a proactive Stores Assistant to join our busy Estates team. Based in Cheltenham, close to Cheltenham General Hospital, you’ll play a key role
in keeping things running smoothly by managing our stock of building, electrical, and mechanical materials – ensuring our maintenance teams have everything they need to keep our hospitals safe, functional and fully operational.

You’ll be part of a busy and varied Estates service, where each day brings something new. We’re continuing to develop and improve how we work, and we value people who bring fresh ideas, a strong work ethic, and a practical, solutions-focused approach.

Main duties of the job

We’re looking for someone with great organisational skills, a hands-on approach and the ability to keep things moving in a fast-paced environment. Key responsibilities include:

- Managing a large stock inventory of over 2,000 items, with a value of around £200,000

- Requisitioning and issuing materials to the Estates maintenance team.

- Ensuring timely deliveries and maintaining accurate records using our Facilities Management System.

- Conducting regular stock checks and audits.

- Working closely with the Workshop Manager to ensure materials are available for planned works.

- Maintaining inventories at both Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospital sites.

- Monitoring and ordering personal protective equipment (PPE) and keeping distribution records.

- Liaising with suppliers to manage stock levels and resolve any supply issues.

- Keeping stores clean, tidy, safe, and well organised.

- Regularly lifting and moving stock items (frequently up to 25kg, occasionally more with lifting equipment).

To succeed in this role, you will need:

- A good understanding of building and engineering materials.

- Strong organisational and communication skills.

- Good computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office.

- A positive customer-focused attitude.

- The ability to work independently and collaboratively.

- Good numeracy and literacy skills.

- A full, clean driving licence is desirable.

You’ll work closely with Estates and maintenance colleagues across two busy hospital sites, supporting the planning and delivery of essential works. You’ll also take a proactive approach to managing stock, identifying slow-moving items, and suggesting improvements to increase efficiency.

  • Basic education with good numeracy and literacy skills.
Desirable criteria

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience managing stock and inventory (e.g. over 2,000 items).
  • Experience issuing and requisitioning materials.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience using IT systems for record keeping (e.g. ordering, tracking stock).
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, practical or hands-on role (e.g. warehouse, estates, maintenance).
  • Experience working as part of a team in a support or operational environment.

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good understanding of stock management processes.
  • Strong organisational skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Good computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office.
  • Clear and confident communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
