Job overview

The clinical fellows will be covering ECU, ITU, obstetrics and general anaesthesia with ST3s and Specialist Registrars.  The main commitment will be at enhanced care unit at QMH. The post holders will be expected to provide cover at both Queen Mary’s Hospital and Darent Valley Hospital.

 

Main duties of the job

When on-call, the fellows are responsible for the management of the patients in ECU at Queen Mary's Hospital. During night shift, they look after ECU patients and surgical patients. They can be asked to cover other areas in the hospital, including theatres, obstetrics and ITU. They will be expected to support RSOs at QMH. When at DVH, they will be expected to support the ST1/2 in the management of general anaesthesia under the supervision of the ITU Consultant and Anaesthetic Consultant for out-of-hours, as well as supporting the care delivery within the operating theatres. The post holder will collaborate and be a member of the Cardiac Arrest and Trauma Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Fellows are expected to participate in the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing elective or emergency surgery and to attend theatre sessions as indicated on the weekly rota. 

The above-mentioned duties may need to be varied to meet the needs of the Service. The appointee will cover anaesthetic lists at Darent Valley Hospital & Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup. These lists include specialities like Gen Surgery, Major Colorectal, Urology, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and daily CEPOD (Consultant led) lists. There are also dedicated daily trauma lists, varying from all day to sessional lists, including provision over the weekend.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience as Senior House Officer/ST1/2 level in Anaesthesia is required.
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma in Anaesthesia

Training and experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in anaesthesia at Registrar level.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience within intensive care
  • Previous experience in UK health system.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Leadership and Budgetary skills. Good interpersonal relationship
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, Nursing and Administration staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous management experience, Courses: MBA or equivalent

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and personal and professional development
  • Ability to teach effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of teaching
  • Teaching qualification

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Innovative team player who can accomplish clinical projects in liaison with fellow professionals
