Senior Stroke Dietitian

Job overview

We have an opportunity for an experienced dietitian to join our friendly team as the lead stroke dietitian for acute and community stroke dietetic care across Dartford, Gravesham & Swanley. This will be a 12 month fixed term post covering maternity leave.  You will lead a small acute stroke dietetic team and work independently in the community, looking after stroke patients with and without feeding tubes.  This clinical service currently operates Monday to Friday and is a split role with 50% of time in the acute setting and 50% of the time in the community.

You will be well supported and you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the wider dietetic service which the Dartford & Gravesham team provide.

Main duties of the job

To be the dietetic lead for the acute stroke unit and working with a small dietetic team. 

To provide a comprehensive nutrition and dietetics service for stroke patients in both the acute and community settings, ensuring continuity of care. 

To have the clinical skills/knowledge to manage the daily care and insertion of enteral feeding tube/ tube related problems in both the acute and community setting.

To independently manage a caseload of home enteral nutrition (HEN)  patients and be a point of contact for HEN queries and cover for the wider HEN caseload.

Education & Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Post grad Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent qualification
  • Registered Dietitian with HCPC
  • 3-4 years post graduate experience to include enteral feeding and community dietetics
  • Evidence of post graduate education /CPD
  • Trained in facilitated learning for undergraduate practice placement
Desirable criteria
  • BDA membership
  • Membership of special interest group
  • Completion of PENG course or equivalent experience in community enteral feeding

Knowledge & skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to plan workload and manage junior staff as required
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Problem solving and decision making skills
  • A knowledge of personal accountability and responsibilities as laid down by Rules and Professional Conduct
  • Good communication skills
  • Motivation and interest towards extending skills and knowledge

  • Able to assess and manage stoma sites and feeding tubes

  • Varied clinical experience with patients of acute/high dependency, stroke care, enteral feeding, dysphagia, management, diabetes and lipids
  • Previous experience of working with Home Enteral Nutrition patients
  • Use of protocols and care pathways for specific interventions and conditions
  • Experience of auditing practice and making recommendations for change
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of implementing ideas and developing services
