Job overview

Our Emergency Medicine department staff pride themselves on providing a high quality “shop floor” clinical presence, together with high standards of education, training, research and audit. The post holder will work in close co-operation with nursing, managerial, and medical colleagues to provide high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. This post will be to cover all areas of Urgent and Emergency Care.

Main duties of the job

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: -

  • To see patients attending the Emergency Department, making primary diagnosis and initiating emergency treatment. This will be at middle-grade level within the department.
  • To participate in a 24-hour full shift rota
  • To provide a first-class clinical service to our patients
  • To provide sufficient information to colleagues during handover to ensure consistency of care and clinical safety
  • To supervise and teach junior clinical staff including carrying out workplace-based assessments (WPBAs)
  • To develop professionally and take part in all services development
  • To engage in personal development and appraisal process – required to achieve revalidation with GMC.
  • To work ad hoc duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with colleagues both senior and junior.
  • To adhere strictly to antimicrobial prescribing policy.
  • To treat patients and colleagues with care and compassion

Within the working week, 1 Programme Activity of paid time is set aside for personal professional development and other supporting professional activities as directed, from time to time, by the clinical director of emergency medicine.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • IELTS (Academic)level 7.5, or graduate of a medical school in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada
  • ALS
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS (desirable)
  • PALS (desirable)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broadly based medical, surgical and Emergency Medicine experience
  • Understanding of audit

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 3 years post full registration with at least six months in Emergency Medicine
  • General Medicine, Anaesthetics or Surgery as Foundation Year 2 or above or equivalent experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role of middle grade doctor.
  • Computer literate for communication and audit purposes.
  • Good team work

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates commitments to teaching junior members of staff
  • Understands importance of teaching
