An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Registered Children’s Nurse to support the continuing development of the Paediatric Asthma/ Respiratory service at Darent Valley Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and innovative Registered Children’s Nurse  with experience in paediatric asthma to join our service to work as part of our specialist nursing team across Paediatrics.  .

We have an asthma team offering an excellent service for children and young people within the locality, forging strong links with tertiary services.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work across children’s services providing clinical, specialist and holistic support/advice to children and young people. 

We are looking for you to apply if you are a motivated clinical senior children’s nurse, with knowledge and experience in paediatric asthma, preferably including experience working with young people approaching transition to adult services. You will be working independently running nurse led clinics and also supporting consultant clinics. You will have excellent interpersonal, IT and communication skills with the ability to organise, manage and plan your own workload effectively. You will be dedicated and passionate in your role whilst demonstrating excellent leadership and team working. You will be energetic and dedicated in working as an advocate in support of our children, young people and their families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will run joint and nurse led clinics in conjunction with Consultant colleagues to offer the highest level of care to the patients. You will manage a caseload of children and young people carrying out spirometry within the hospital, and supporting with inhaler technique and care planning. You will be the point of contact for the asthma service. 

The role will provide highly specialised support and advice. You will be expected to provide advice and support in relation to management of asthma for children and young people, and will be expected to provide clinical and educational support to staff within the Trust. This will involve reviewing patients on the children's acute ward as well as in the outpatients setting.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children's Nurse
  • Experience with dealing with families and children with Asthma
  • Teaching/Mentorship qualification
  • Completed or willing to undertake a qualification in management of children with Asthma/spirometry
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Respiratory nursing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Minimum 2 years’ relevant post registration experience in paediatrics at Band 6
  • • Experience in managing families and children with asthma
  • • Previous experience in teaching of patients & staff.
  • • Awareness of delivering research/evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
  • • Previous nurse specialist experience, including running Nurse Led Clinics
  • • Experience of undertaking PDR’s and day to day supervision of staff
  • Previous experience in audit and evaluation

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge, skills and expertise in the speciality of Paediatric Asthma, including national policies and guidelines
  • Ability to plan and run nurse led clinics
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information in all formats where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Prioritises own workload
  • Understanding of the holistic needs of children, young people and families with Asthma
Desirable criteria
  • Able to undertake Spirometry
