Job overview
We are looking for a Simulation Fellow to be a member of our cohesive team, working in the Medical Education Department and in clinical areas helping improve the postgraduate and undergraduate education through simulation based education. The simulation fellow will be delivering in-situ and simulation suite simulation based education programmes, including the expansion of multiprofessional simulation.
The role will allow for the opportunity to develop teaching skills, extending knowledge of educational theory and undertaking educational research. It will suit an individual who has an interest in medical education and educational research and want to take time out to focus on these interests for a year.
The level will be CT2+/ST4 or equivalent. The Simulation Fellow, as well as being responsible to Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead, and if required a speciality supervisor, the post holder will also be supported by a dedicated team of Medical Education Officers.

We will encourage you to undertake and will fund a PGCert in education or other related PGCert and you will have a study leave budget of £800, which will allow you to attend courses in your specialty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Responsibilities:
- To work in collaboration across the educational pathway to support the implementation of simulation and human factors across the service.
- To support the development of a safety culture across the organisation, incorporating patient safety as a key component across educational programmes.
- Support the Simulation Lead and Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead with the training for the Trust ensuring that learning interventions enable the Trust to deliver high quality safe care to its patients and meets its regulatory requirements.
- To be able to conduct / lead an educational debrief following simulation this would need to incorporate both technical and non-technical skills.
- Assist in the maintenance of audio visual aids
- Continually maintain and develop own professional knowledge and expertise in line with the need of the Trust, GMC and other professional bodies
- Assist on the key functions of simulation-based education:
-
- Simulation training and supporting new simulation practitioners
- In-situ simulation in clinical areas
- Human Factors training
- Deliver on educational projects identified by the Simulation Lead and Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead, ensuring that project management principles are adhered to, deadlines met and the objectives to the project are achieved.
- To support the Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead in performing related risk assessments and implementing/reviewing any subsequent actions.
- Design and deliver educational programmes across clinical education, and support medical education and learning and development in this, ensuring that organisational requirements are met.
Education and development responsibilities:
To develop personal skills in education including:
- An understanding of adult educational theories;
- Knowledge of educational theory and undertaking educational research
- Assessment and evaluation methodology;
- Knowledge of human factors and crisis resource management and their role in simulation-based learning and the wider clinical environment.
- Participate in the development and teaching of new and existing teaching courses, for postgraduate and undergraduate trainees, including simulation programmes.
- Undertake evaluation of courses and teaching delivered to ensure that trainees’ needs are continually met.
- Undertake research in healthcare education and aim to present research and novel ideas at local, national and international meetings.
- Participation in committee meetings.

Education & Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for Full GMC Registration and License to Practice at the time of appointment
- ALS Provider
- Evidence of teaching
Desirable criteria
- Publications in recognised medical or academic journals
- Intercalated BSc or equivalent Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD
- Previous experience in simulation

- Competence in independent management of medical emergencies

- An understanding of NHS management and resources.
- Previous experience in delivering education, ideally in an inter-professional setting.
- Demonstrated experience with simulation-based education events
- Demonstrated experience in research-based activities and data collection
