Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon – Darent Valley Hospital
We are seeking to appoint two Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons to join our dynamic and expanding Orthopaedic Department at Darent Valley Hospital.
The successful candidates will work alongside a well-established team of 12 substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and participate in a 1:8 on-call week commitments and 1:12 on- call weekend commitments. These posts offer the opportunity to develop a specialist interest while providing comprehensive orthopaedic services across both Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital.
Main duties of the job
This is a new Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (LOCUM) post to support the increasing workload in the department and sub-specialisation in foot and ankle. The successful candidate must be on the Specialist Registrar with the GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCST. We offer a comprehensive range of treatment both on the elective and the trauma side for our local and expanding population.
The successful candidate will form part of a 9-member team of Consultants backed by 2 Associate Specialists, 9 Speciality doctors and 3 Deanery Registrars - appointed on the S.E Thames Regional rotation. There will be a total of 10 Junior Doctors (FY2, SHO and CT1s) to support the Directorate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. The post holder will participate in the consultant led trauma service to maintain a high quality trauma service with consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further develop and update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and reconstruction of intra-articular fractures.
2. Surgical work will encompass the whole range of general orthopaedic. Elective surgical work will include primarily foot and ankle surgery including arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction.
3. The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.
4. He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of the Directorate.
5. He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrative responsibilities by representing the Orthopaedic Directorate in Trust committees.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registerable medical qualification, MRCS/FRCS Orthopaedic
- On specialist register or within 6 months of CCT
Desirable criteria
- Research degree/MBA
Training and experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in all aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedics
- Lower limb experience
- Experience in working in a Trauma and Orthopaedic unit
Desirable criteria
- Experience in foot and ankle surgery
- Paediatric foot and ankle surgery
- Diabetic foot experience
Management/Teaching
Essential criteria
- Leadership and Budgetary skills. Good interpersonal relationship
- Committed to training of junior doctors
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of teaching
- Previous management experience, Courses.
