Consultant Urological Surgeon SI in Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer

The Urology department is part of the Urology and Nephrology directorate and is well established department, providing excellent urology to a wide catchment area. The department houses the tertiary Stone Centre, the award-winning Poplar Unit and has a dedicated Redwood Ward. Poplar unit also boasts its own seminar room with state-of-the-art audio-visual facility. There are seven full time consultants and a visiting consultant. This is a new post to cover a consultant urologist with special interest in Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, core urology and cancer diagnostics. The department has 8 middle grade doctors, including two specialist registrars, who are part of the Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) deanery rotation, and two research/clinical fellows pursuing higher degrees. The department also has a two core trainee, trust urology SHO and four foundation doctors. The department is well supported by specialist nurses, cancer and stone coordinators. There is a close engagement with the Kent and Canterbury Christ Church Universities (CCCU) helping the development of translational research.

In addition to core urology, the appointed new consultant will have special interest in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and basic paediatric urology. The candidate will join the team of existing 8 consultants (one visiting) who all have a passion for progress in a friendly and progressive environment. The job is to complement the existing team and provide specialist care to urology patients. The ideal candidate will also be encouraged and supported to develop special interest in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and cancer diagnostics.

 The candidate is expected to work at both at the Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) site and at the Queen Mary Hospital (QMS) site. Outpatient activity, day care and main theatre are undertaken at both sites. In QMH, we have facility of performing surgery in high-risk patients and overnight stay for patients, due to availability of newly developed Enhanced Care Unit. There are Resident Medical Officers manning the place 24/7 including week ends. There is a well-established mechanism to transfer patients to DVH if necessary

This is a specimen plan reflecting proposed activities. It will be mutually agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director, on behalf of the Medical Director after the appointee commences the post. This Job Plan represents the initial weekly programme of work until it is agreed with or without changes between the appointee and the Directorate. The job plan will be tailored to meet the specialist interest and accreditation competencies of the appointee. The job plan will be signed by the Clinical Director and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment. The Job Plan will then be reviewed annually, following the Appraisal Meeting. The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview CESR or European Community Rights and an appropriate higher surgical qualification.

  • • A wide grounding during training of all aspects of Emergency and elective surgery within the speciality of Urology

  • • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates and operative skills to trainee specialists
  • • Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
