Job overview
The Urology department is well established department, providing excellent urology to a wide catchment area. The department houses the tertiary Stone Centre, the award-winning Poplar Unit and has a dedicated Redwood Ward. Poplar unit also boasts its own seminar room with state-of-the-art audio-visual facility. There are seven full time consultants and a visiting consultant. The department has 8 middle grade doctors, including two specialist registrars, who are part of the Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) deanery rotation, and two research/clinical fellows pursuing higher degrees. The department also has a two core trainee, trust urology SHO and three foundation doctors. The department is well supported by specialist nurses, cancer, and stone coordinators. There is a close engagement with the Kent and Canterbury Christ Church Universities (CCCU) helping the development of translational research.
Complex urological surgery eg PCNL and nephrectomy take place at Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) site and both day care and inpatient urological surgery are held in Queen Mary Sidcup (QMS). Outpatients are performed at both sites
Main duties of the job
This Full-time new speciality doctor post will commence as soon as possible for 12 months initially. The appointed new doctor will help the juniors in the ward, attend clinics, theatres and cover on call rota for urology as a registrar. This is a Non-Training Post and Full GMC Registration is required. Although this position does not carry Postgraduate Dean's approval for training recognition, it offers full teaching and training opportunities.
The candidate is expected to work at both at the Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) site and at the Queen Mary Hospital (QMS) site. Outpatient activity, day care and main theatre are undertaken at both sites. Urology team works very closely to Nephrology team to provide optimal care to our patients who suffers both urological and nephrological disorders.
Active participation in Research will be encouraged and supported. Darent Valley Hospital has an active Research and Development Team supported by Specialist Research Nurses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
On-call commitments is 1 in 8 as urology registrar on call. The successful candidate would be expected to attend outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, ward rounds, to participate in the daily management of patients including admin. The appointee will be supported and supervised by consultants.
The successful appointee will be responsible for the day to day running of the urology ward, assisting in theatre sessions and flex cystoscopy lists, and arranging admission and discharges under consultant supervision. A ward round will be conducted each morning, which is for both elective and emergency cases.
