We would love to hear from applicants who have already developed a sub-specialty interest within Elderly Care, and those who have not already done so would be encouraged to do so through in–house training/ attending relevant CPD activities. Opportunities are available across in-patient, out-patient and community services with support from the clinical director and divisional management team to build and develop your area of interest.

The Trust has excellent postgraduate and research facilities, supports study leave for CPD and aids with funding up to an agreed limit. WWL NHS Foundation Trust is an Associated Teaching Hospital of the Edge Hill University.  We also provide training for two Specialist Registrars as part of the Northwest Training rotation which includes an integrated MSc. course in Elderly Care medicine.

Main duties of the job

To provide direct clinical care to older patients accessing hospital services, with a specialist interest in managing frailty related syndromes.

To work within the department in other sub-speciality interests including ortho geriatrics, virtual wards.

To participate in departmental teaching and training programmes.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ageing and Complex Medicine Directorate currently has six substantive Consultants, one Associate Specialist and two Specialist Registrars. Following the recruitment, the applicant will join the existing team contributing expertise in Acute Comprehensive
  • Geriatric Medicine and sub sub-specialties including Stroke Medicine.
  • The successful applicants will join the existing team and have sessional commitments in delivering community medicine (regular MDT meetings, community clinics/visits and Care home visits). They may have sessions in out-patient clinics.
  • The Trust has an active department of Clinical Audit. The General Medicine and Rehabilitation & Care of the Elderly directorates undertake multi-disciplinary audits one half day per month with presentations by junior medical staff, consultants and other therapists.  They also take part in the monthly medical audit programme. Attendance to these sessions is compulsory.
  • In addition to accepting the normal responsibilities for the treatment and welfare of patients under the care of the service, the candidate will be expected to develop and maintain the necessary excellent liaison and working relationships with all other departments and agencies that are associated with the service both within and without the hospitals and the Trust.
  • Responsibility for all records (including patient health, financial, personal and administrative) that they gather or use as part of their work within the trust. The records may be paper, electronic, microfiche, audio or videotapes, x-ray images.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCP part 2 or Full MRCP
Desirable criteria
  • Additional qualifications in leadership or education
  • Post-graduate qualification in related field

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in geriatric medicine
  • Experience of implementing service improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at middle grade in Hospital Geriatric medicine
  • Experience of leadership

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate and up-to-date skills in geriatrics
  • Confidence with Geriatric medicine/Frailty syndromes
  • Appropriate digital skills to support working with EPR, managing consultations digitally, participating in online meetings and implementing new pathways that align with a more digitally able NHS
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, timely clinical documentation
  • Able to work collaboratively with other health care staff
  • Able to effectively communicate with colleagues, patients and their family members
  • Able to communicate, with clarity, in written and spoken English
  • Ability to empathise and show sensitivity
  • Motivated and ambitious

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the assessment and management of common geriatric presentations in hospital and frailty syndromes.
  • An understanding of comprehensive geriatric assessments
  • An awareness of national targets and standards
Desirable criteria
  • Specific courses or conference relating to Frailty/Comprehensive geriatric assessments

  • A good understanding of the audit cycle and management of change
  • Evidence of involvement in local audit
  • Demonstrates understanding of research principles and data analysis
  • Enthusiasm for teaching
  • Evidence of formal teaching of different student groups
  • Fit to undertake full range of duties subject to workplace health and wellbeing screening
  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
