Job overview

The Team Manager will be responsible for the operational management and development of the Military Veteran Service (MVS) and OpCourage North West service in conjunction with the senior management team.

OpCourage North West is a multi-disciplinary team of practitioners is commissioned to offer psychological treatment and interventions to Veterans of the British Armed Forces who live in the North West, who are experiencing mental health difficulties.  The post holder will manage the operational requirements of the service, and have clear aims for the team’s development and be able to achieve targets and goals set.

 

MVS is a multi-disciplinary team of practitioners which is commissioned to offer psychological treatment and intervention to Veterans of the British Armed Forces (including current reservists when not mobilised) who live in Greater Manchester and Lancashire, who are experiencing complex mental health difficulties related to their military service, whose mental health condition is related to their military service, e.g. linked to experiences whilst serving and/or difficulties with transition to civilian life; and who are suitable for psychological therapy but unable or unwilling to access local mainstream services; and not currently being treated by secondary care mental health services. 

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities
• To  manage the MVS and OpCourage Service, supported by the services lead. 
• To effectively manage, direct and supervise the work of staff within the team. 
• To effectively and efficiently manage resources within the team in liaison with the service manager. 
• To ensure the team work to national legislation, local policies and procedures and eligibility criteria. 
• To ensure the service works to agreed objectives and targets and meets service KPIs. 
• To work with and monitor performance within clinics and the impact on the Mental Health Service. 
• Coordination of the workforce to ensure all clinical activity is covered.
• To ensure the team have appropriate training, clinical skills and supervision to meet the needs of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical 

·         To be responsible for the on-going planning and development of the MVS and Op Courage North West team in line with the overall aims of both the North Collaborative and the Trust goals.

·         To be responsible for decision-making and professional advice on individual cases and the allocation of resources to meet individual assessed needs.

·         To be a source of clinical expertise and advice for the team in the execution of their duties.

·         To be able to provide practical support within the clinics where needed, and to maintain skill base.

·         To support the development of the carer forums within the triangle of carer.

·         To lead on the resolution of complaints from service users and carers as per Trust policy.

·         To report and complete incident forms, lead on investigations and other governance processes as per Trust policy.

·         To write reports for coroner’s inquests, mental health tribunals and other legal processes as required.

·         To lead on and manage all HR processes within the team as per Trust policy and in conjunction with HR and the service manager

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse OR Registered Social Worker
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Completion of Preparation for Mentorship qualification or willingness to complete.
  • Short courses and experience to postgraduate diploma level.
Desirable criteria
  • NMP
  • Management qualification
  • Qualification in CBT / EMDR etc

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience as a senior mental health practitioner within NHS.
  • Working within a clinical area such as community / depo clinics
  • Participation in Service development.
  • Able to demonstrate managerial experience or potential.
  • Extensive experience of working with clients with complex Mental Health needs.
  • Working with multi-agency safeguarding procedures.
  • Experience of supervising the work of junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of business planning.
  • Experience of resource management.
  • Experience of delivery of Clinical Supervision.
  • Experience of working with military communities or evidence of understanding veterans communities.
  • Experience of being able to conduct a thorough psycho- social assessment and develop collaborative care plans with clients

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding key principles within Mental Health Services Legislation MHA, MCA, Care Act
  • CPA
  • Standards relevant to service area
  • Planning, decision making structures relevant to service area.
  • Specialist knowledge of Mental Health problems and medications used in this setting.
  • Role and function of key partners in statutory and non- statutory agencies.
  • Health and Safety
  • Knowledge of how physical health and mental health are interlinked and the key challenges facing mental health services users in relation to their physical health
  • Team cultures and influencing factors in implementing change
Desirable criteria
  • Local knowledge – services and facilities Specialist knowledge of therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of understand of the mental health needs of Military Veterans and their families / carers
  • Working knowledge of Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children

  • Ability to manage, motivate and supervise a professional MDT.
  • Ability to identify and define team and individual training / development
  • Ability to lead negotiations in respect of service development
  • Ability to function and make decisions in a high pressure clinical environment.

  • Evidence of effective change management skills
  • Ability to manage own emotions and deal with others in highly charged situations.
  • Ability to provide education and training to different grades of professional staff both informal and by formal presentation.
  • Ability to ensure the team operates effectively as part of the wider mental health system in the north west
  • Ability to critically appraise incidents to ensure appropriate learning is identified and used to improve practice
