Are you a passionate and motivated individual with experience in the catering industry? Do you have what it takes to lead a team and deliver exceptional food service? We are currently looking for a Catering Team Leader to join our Facilities Team. This position will be based at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny, you will also be required to support other sites within the Health Board.
The Catering Team Leader will support the Facilities Management team to deliver a safe, high quality, cost effective and efficient service consistently for patients, staff and visitors within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The Catering Team Leader is responsible for the effective day to day safe operation of the food production/delivery & staffing for catering services within hospital kitchens and restaurants for specific hospital sites.
Main duties of the job
- Lead and supervise catering staff, ensuring tasks are completed to agreed standards.
- Oversee safe preparation, cooking, and dispatch of meals.
- Ensure compliance with HACCP, food safety, and hygiene regulations.
- Monitor food quality, portion control, and presentation.
- Manage stock levels, ordering, and rotation.
- Conduct audits and support internal/external inspections.
- Handle complaints and special dietary requests with professionalism.
- Maintain accurate records and use digital systems for service delivery.
- Support staff training and development, fostering a positive team culture.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A relevant cookery qualification Level 2 or equivalent as well extensive experience working in a large-scale catering operation with extensive experience managing a catering team within a large-scale catering environment
- Level 3 Food Safety qualification
- Allergen Management qualification
- ILM Level 3 Management or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery
- Level 4 Food Safety Certificate
- Level 3 HACCP for Catering Certificate
- Certificate in Health and Safety e.g. IOSH
- Manual Handling Certificate
Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven experience in large-scale catering operation as a chef, preferably in a hospital or care setting with the ability to meet deadlines
- Detailed knowledge of Food safety Legislation, HACCP principles, Allergen Management and COSHH
- Strong leadership abilities, capacity to work under pressure, effective communication skills, and capability to lead a team and organise workloads
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience working in a hospital catering setting
- Day to day supervision of a catering team with multiple members, including team meetings
- Knowledge of special dietary needs including gluten free, low fat, halal, vegan and vegetarian
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and electronically)
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams including managers and supervisors
- Strong multitasking and organisational skills to deliver a quality food service within time constraints to patients. staff and visitors
- Capability to instruct and manage a team, motivating staff to maintain the service and training compliance as well as inducting and mentoring staff
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage time effectively, working within time limits and under pressure
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure HACCP policies and procedures as well as standard recipes are implemented as necessary
- Proficient IT skills to include Microsoft office
- Self-motivated with a willingness to respond to unexpected changes and adopt a flexible approach to work
- Commitment to personal development
- Ability to deal with staff and customers sensitively and diplomatically acting in a polite and respectful manner
- Awareness of security and confidentiality
- Ability to travel between sites
Desirable criteria
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
