We’re looking for a talented and motivated Chef to join our Catering Services team within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
As a vital part of our facilities service, you’ll help us deliver nutritious, attractive and safe meals to patients, staff, and visitors—supporting wellbeing and recovery across the Health Board.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
As a Chef within our team, you will:
Prepare and cook a wide range of meals to the highest standard, including special diets and allergen‑aware dishes.
Follow set recipes, production methods and food safety legislation—ensuring compliance with HACCP and NHS catering policies.
Ensure correct food storage, labelling and portioning to maintain safety and quality.
Maintain accurate documentation including temperature records, stock control and due‑diligence checks.
Work collaboratively with managers, ward staff and catering assistants to keep services running smoothly.
Support the induction and training of new staff and help supervise catering assistants when required.
Uphold exceptional hygiene standards, complying with Food Hygiene, Health & Safety and Infection Prevention & Control policies.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of various cooking techniques, including conventional and cook freeze catering models, stock control, food safety management and special dietary requirements of patients and/or customers in line with NHS Food and Hydration standards.
- A relevant cookery qualification Level 2 or equivalent as well as significant experience working in a large-scale catering operation.
- Level 3 Food Safety qualification
- Allergen Management qualification.
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery
Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven experience in large-scale catering operation as a chef, preferably in a hospital or care setting.
- Working knowledge of Food safety Legislation, HACCP principles, COSHH and Allergen management.

- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong multitasking and organisational skills to deliver a quality food service within time constraints to patients. staff and visitors
- Capability to work well within a team and manage staff when necessary to maintain the service.
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage time effectively
- Capacity to work within time limits and under pressure.
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure temperature monitoring paperwork and cleaning schedules are updated as necessary.
- Good IT skills.
- Willingness to respond to unexpected changes and adopt a flexible approach.
Desirable criteria
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
