Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Assistant Team Leader to join the Pre-Analytical Department at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. This role is ideal for an experienced Biomedical Assistant or Associate Practitioner looking to take the next step into a supervisory and leadership position within a fast-paced laboratory environment.

The post holder will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day operational delivery of pre-analytical laboratory services, ensuring accurate and timely processing of specimens, maintaining high technical standards, and supporting staff development. The role requires strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lead by example within a 7-day service model.

Main duties of the job

Supervise and provide day-to-day leadership for Biomedical Assistants and Higher Level Biomedical Assistants within the team.

Organise, prioritise and allocate daily workload to ensure efficient specimen workflow and timely processing of urgent samples.

Oversee specimen reception and pre-analytical activities, ensuring sample integrity and accurate data entry onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Trust policies, and quality standards including ISO 15189 and UKAS requirements.

Support the development, review and updating of SOPs and contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives.

Deliver training, competency assessments and maintain training records for team members.

Participate in staff rota planning to support a 7-day service and maintain safe staffing levels.

Assist with quality monitoring, audits, risk assessments and health & safety compliance within the laboratory.

Maintain stock control, equipment care, and highlight shortages or maintenance issues to senior staff.

Promote safe handling, storage and disposal of biological samples, chemicals and laboratory waste in line with COSHH and national guidance.

Communicate effectively with laboratory management, biomedical scientists, clinicians and service users where required.

Participate in departmental meetings, annual appraisals, and ongoing professional development.

Essential criteria
  • Level 4 qualification e.g. NVQ, HNC, BTEC, Apprenticeship   or   IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part II) plus extensive laboratory experience  Or Foundation Level Degree
Desirable criteria
  • Other relevant courses with regards to H&S, supervision, quality or training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
Desirable criteria
  • Discipline specific NHS laboratory experience

Skills

  • Keyboard and basic IT skills
